A Russian woman died on a ferry that sank off Cyprus, the embassy in Turkey reported.

ANKARA, August 31 - RIA Novosti. A Russian citizen died in a ferry that sank off Cyprus, the Russian Embassy in Turkey reported on Monday.

“In addition to the previously posted message about the tragedy with the ferry that sank on August 30 off the coast of the island of Cyprus, we inform you that, according to updated information received from the Turkish authorities, a citizen of the Russian Federation died in the disaster. We express our condolences to her family and friends,” the diplomatic mission’s Telegram channel says.

A ferry with 259 passengers and eight crew members capsized into the sea 2.5 kilometers off the coast of the city of Girne in the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus.

Authorities in Northern Cyprus have declared three days of mourning following the ferry disaster that killed at least eight people. A search is underway for 17 people, said the Minister of Transport of the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus (TRNC), recognized only by Turkey, Erhan Arikli. The ferry captain and seven other responsible persons were detained, TRNC Prime Minister Unal Ustel said earlier. The missing are being searched for using drones and divers.
