The “Shenzhen-Hong Kong-Guangzhou” innovation cluster continues to top the global innovation index

China News Service, Guangzhou, September 8 (Reporter Sun Qiuxia) The World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO) released the "2026 Global Innovation Index" list of "World's Top 100 Innovation Clusters" on the 8th. The "Shenzhen-Hong Kong-Guangzhou" innovation cluster topped the list for the third consecutive year, and the "Macau-Zhuhai" innovation cluster was shortlisted for the world's top 100 for three consecutive years.

It is reported that the innovation cluster rankings released by WIPO in the past two years have adopted three core indicators: "number of PCT international patent applications", "number of high-level paper publications" and "venture capital transaction volume", which not only emphasizes the output and layout of intellectual property rights, but also highlights the value realization of innovative achievements.

The reporter learned from the Guangdong Provincial Administration for Market Regulation (Intellectual Property Office) that during the data cycle of this list, the above three core indicators of the "Shenzhen-Hong Kong-Guangzhou" innovation cluster reached 120,095 cases, 215,866 articles, and 7,325 cases respectively. Among them, the PCT international patent application volume indicator has played an important role in supporting the "Shenzhen-Hong Kong-Guangzhou" innovation cluster to remain at the top of the world, accounting for more than 60% of the score.

In recent years, Guangdong has joined hands with Hong Kong and Macao to open up the entire chain of intellectual property creation, application, protection and services in the Greater Bay Area, providing a source of vitality for building an international science and technology innovation center in the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area. Data show that from January to July 2026, Guangdong Province filed 15,664 PCT applications, a year-on-year increase of 3.57%, ranking first in the country. (over)
