Candidate Maeng Jeong-seop, who lost in the Chungju mayoral election, applies for a temporary injunction to suspend elected Lee Dong-seok from performing his duties.

On the 26th, Democratic Party candidate Maeng Jeong-seop, who lost by 124 votes in the Chungju mayoral election in North Chungcheong Province and requested a recount, filed a request with the court for a temporary injunction to suspend People Power Party's Lee Dong-seok from carrying out his duties.

In an application for provisional injunction submitted to the Chungju Branch of the Cheongju District Court on this day, Candidate Maeng argued, "If the election results are overturned or declared invalid through a recount on the 15th, confusion may arise surrounding the legal effect of all administrative measures executed by President-elect Lee since the start of his term. This is an issue that may cause irreparable damage, including complete paralysis of Chungju city administration and a decline in trust."

He added, "Until the final result of the appeal on the main bill is released and the integrity of the election is proven, it is necessary to temporarily suspend the execution of the elected president's duties to ensure the safety of Chungju City administration."

In the last June 3 local elections, candidate Maeng received 49.94% (52,838 votes) of the votes and lost by 124 votes to People Power Party's Lee Dong-seok, who received 50.05% (52,962 votes).

Candidate Maeng filed a petition to the National Election Commission on the 8th to invalidate the election on the grounds that there were too many invalid votes (2,277 votes) than the difference in votes between candidates.

The recount will be held on the 15th of next month at the main auditorium of Korea National University of Transportation using a multiple vote count method.

Candidate Maeng paid 54.87 million won in recount costs to the Provincial Election Commission.
