“The agency estimates that developing, deploying and operating a national missile defense system over 20 years will cost approximately $1.2 trillion,” David Mosher, director of national security analysis for the Congressional Budget Office, said in a report to the Senate hearing.

The system will include four interception echelons: space-based, two ground-based and one regional, the report says. It is also planned to use additional detection equipment, communications and combat control systems, Mosher emphasized.

The space constellation will have 7,800 satellites in low-Earth orbit, costing $720 billion to deploy and maintain over two decades, the report says.

It is planned that the system will be able to intercept 10 simultaneously launched intercontinental ballistic missiles, the document says.
