The Iraqi government recovers 1.359 trillion dinars in the anti-corruption campaign

The Iraqi government revealed, on Saturday, that the amount of money and assets it recovered during the campaign it launched against corruption in the country amounted to 1.359 trillion Iraqi dinars (about 1.037 billion dollars).

The official Iraqi News Agency (INA) quoted government spokesman Haider Al-Aboudi as saying, “The value of the funds, assets, or real estate recovered within the framework of the anti-corruption campaign is estimated at more than one trillion and 359 billion dinars.”

He explained that the number of complaints received by the Integrity Commission “exceeded 26,000 reports, especially during the dawn prayer phase,” which is the name given to anti-corruption operations during the recent period.

Al-Aboudi added that "the government is continuing on the path of institutional reform aimed at closing corruption loopholes," continuing his speech by saying that "the Iraqi judiciary represents the greatest guarantee for supporting the anti-corruption campaign and the success of its goals."

The Supreme Judicial Council in Iraq revealed earlier this month that $20 million had been seized and 60 kilograms of gold recovered in the case of the arrested Undersecretary of the Ministry of Oil for Liquidation Affairs, Adnan Al-Jumaili, and the parties involved with him.

The Iraqi authorities arrested a number of political officials in the country on corruption-related charges on June 29.

The Iraqi News Agency reported, "The arrests were based on a statement given by the former Deputy Oil Minister, Adnan Al-Jumaili - who was arrested last month - and included members of Parliament whose immunity was lifted, and officials whose names were mentioned in those confessions."
