Profile and history of first-term lawmaker Park Seon-won, former first deputy director of the National Intelligence Service

(Seoul = Yonhap News) Reporter Park Jae-ha = A first-elected member of the National Assembly from the pro-Myung (pro-Lee Jae-myung) faction, who was the first deputy director of the National Intelligence Service.

Born in Naju, Jeollanam-do, he entered Yonsei University's Department of Business Administration in 1982 and participated in the student movement, including being accused of being the mastermind behind the 1985 Gwangju American Cultural Center occupation and serving time in prison.

He received a master's degree in East Asian studies from Yonsei University and a doctorate in international politics from the University of Warwick, England, in 2000.

In 2003, he served as an administrator in the strategic planning office of the National Security Council of the participatory government, and then as secretary for unification, foreign affairs and security strategy in the Presidential Secretariat from 2006 to 2008.

During the Moon Jae-in administration, he served as Consul General in Shanghai, Special Assistant to the Director of the National Intelligence Service for Foreign Affairs and Security, and Director of the National Intelligence Service's Keynote Office, and was appointed as the 8th First Deputy Director of the National Intelligence Service in 2021.

In 2023, he was selected as the 4th talent to be recruited by the Democratic Party of Korea, and the following year, he was strategically nominated by Incheon Bupyeong and entered the National Assembly.

Supreme Council member Park first publicly warned of the possibility of martial law under former President Yoon Seok-yeol during the filibuster (unlimited debate) to process the so-called 'Four Broadcasting Act' in July 2024, about four months before the December 3 martial law took place.

After the actual outbreak of martial law, he actively sought to identify those responsible for the rebellion, including revealing that live ammunition and submachine guns were provided to martial law troops who entered the National Assembly grounds.
