Travel time by train or car across the bridge to Sakhalin, the construction of which is periodically mentioned in statements at the highest level, can be 10-15 minutes, Pavel Ivankin, president of the Russian National Research Center for Transportation and Infrastructure, calculated for RIA Novosti.

A bridge to Sakhalin needs to be built, despite its high cost, Russian President Vladimir Putin said in April 2026 at a meeting with representatives of indigenous peoples of Russia.

The construction of a structure with railway and auto options, Ivankin estimated, could take four to five years and cost up to 1.1 trillion rubles.

“The travel time across the bridge will be about 10-15 minutes, depending on the set speed,” the expert believes.
