Putin and Trump had a telephone conversation on resolving the conflict in Ukraine

Russian and US Presidents Vladimir Putin and Donald Trump held a phone conversation on September 8, Russian presidential aide Yuri Ushakov said.

The conversation lasted exactly one hour in a "mutually respectful and businesslike manner." Ushakov described the dialogue as "constructive and quite frank," while emphasizing that he could not share many important details and nuances, as the conversation was confidential.

The main topic was the settlement of the Ukrainian conflict and the recent trips of Trump's envoys Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner to Moscow and Kyiv. The presidents assessed the results of the visits "positively," agreeing to continue work toward a resolution.

According to Ushakov, Donald Trump clearly conveyed the idea during the conversation that an early end to the conflict was desirable. This would immediately open up "impressive and large-scale prospects" for the full restoration of relations between the US and Russia, especially in trade and economic ties, Putin's aide reported. Trump also wants a breakthrough to be achieved during his presidency.

Putin supported this mindset "in the context of possibly building a constructive partnership between two great powers," positively assessed the mediation efforts of the US and Trump personally to find ways to resolve the Ukrainian conflict, Ushakov indicated.

He also spoke about a detailed analysis of what is currently happening in the special military operation zone—how Russia sees the "prospects for advancing on the battlefield and achieving the goals and objectives set by the special operation." "By the way, what the Americans could realistically do to end the military actions as soon as possible was outlined," Ushakov stressed.

Against the backdrop of statements about Russia's aggressive intentions toward Europe, Putin assured the American leader that the Russian Federation "does not even think about" any such plans regarding the countries of the continent. "The myths being spread about a Russian threat serve the Europeans merely as a cover to scale up support for Ukraine and their own military spending," Ushakov stated.

He also added that Putin and Trump agreed to continue working on addressing humanitarian issues, including exchanges of detainees and convicts. The Russian president noted the efforts of the American leader's wife, Melania Trump, to return both Russian and Ukrainian children to their families.
