As of September 4, the right-wing coalition government led by Giorgia Meloni has been in power for 1,413 consecutive days, surpassing the record of 1,412 days in power set by former Prime Minister Silvio Berlusconi from 2001 to 2005, breaking Italy's long-standing curse of "short-lived cabinets."
Since the end of World War II, Italy has experienced nearly 70 changes of government, and the average cabinet life span is only about 14 months. The shortest-lived cabinet after World War II was Prime Minister Amintore Fanfani in 1954, which lasted only 22 days. The term of the government led by Meloni's predecessor, Prime Minister Mario Draghi, was 617 days.
Meloni elaborated. In recent years, the Italian government has been committed to increasing employment, reducing unemployment, supporting families and businesses, strengthening security, managing public finances with integrity, and reshaping Italy's status and credibility on the international stage. Meloni's call for unity comes amid the fact that the Italian right wing is currently facing the biggest split in history, which threatens to impact the stability of the right-wing ruling coalition.
The current ruling coalition is composed of the Brothers of Italy (FDI) led by Meloni, and the League Party (LEGA) and Forza Italia led by the two deputy prime ministers. Roberto Vannacci, a former Italian army general and current member of the European Parliament, left the League in February this year and founded the far-right Futuro Nazionale party, which has rapidly risen to overturn the map of right-wing parties.
The latest polls in Italy show that the support rate of Vanachi's "National Future" party once exceeded 7.5%, not only completely overwhelming the old club League Party (5.7%), but even surpassing the "Forza Italia" (7.1%).
