Registration deadline for Tainan local public office elections in 2026: 4 mayors are running, and the race for council members is fierce

Registration for the 2026 local civil servant election ends today. Four Tainan mayors have registered to run, including Chen Tingfei of the Democratic Progressive Party, Hsieh Longjie of the Kuomintang, and Xiao Zhenhong of the Taiwan SoR Party, and Ye Renwen, who has no party membership. As a member of the Southern City Council, there are a total of 13 districts and 57 seats to be elected. A total of 88 people have registered, and the 7th (Yongkang District) and 8th (Central and Western Districts) districts have more than 10 candidates.

Although the outside world believes that the overall election situation in Tainan is relatively cold, there are still 4 people registered to run for Tainan mayor and 88 people registered to run for city councillors. The mayor of Tainan mainly focuses on the blue-green showdown, with Chen Tingfei and Hsieh Long-chie showing that they "go their own way" with almost zero offense and defense, and there is no smell of election campaign smoke. Some elected members still hope that "the hen will bring up the chicks," while some candidates believe that "it is more practical to work independently."

There are 13 Tainan City Councilor constituencies, with 32 nominated by the Democratic Progressive Party, 22 by the Kuomintang, 4 by the People's Party, 2 by the Taiwan United Party, and 1 by the Taiwan Foundation Progressive Party. The remaining 27 candidates are candidates without party membership. Among them, the 7th Constituency (Yongkang District), where there is a big explosion of candidates, is "12 to 7". The KMT has only one incumbent, Lin Yanzhu, and the last four nominees of the party are "fighting each other in the network". The DPP has 3 seats, and the non-party incumbent Lin Guanwei is strong. In the 8th District (Central West and North District), there was an unprecedented "11 to 6" situation. There are also many generational changes in the parliamentarian section. The 3rd district blue camp councilor You Rongzhi was succeeded by his daughter You Jingkuan. The 6th district green camp councilor Guo Qinghua introduced his daughter Guo Pinchen. The 7th district non-party member Li Zhenguo promoted his son Li Binglun to run for the KMT. The 9th district blue camp Lin Meiyan was succeeded by his son Ye Hanxun. The 10th district blue camp Zeng Peiya was also succeeded by his son Ou Zhenghao.

What shocked the public was that Tainan City Pingdi Aboriginal City Councilor Ying Aidali gave up running for re-election without warning and did not complete registration. A total of 1,187 people from 650 districts in the city registered to run for district chief.
