Almost 30 new islands have appeared in Russia over the past 15 years

Over the past 15 years, almost 30 new islands have appeared on Russian territory. The appearance of new objects on the map is reported by the Shot Telegram channel.

Scientists cite global warming as the reason for this. One of the new islands was noticed in 2025 in Borzov Bay on Novaya Zemlya. Then scientist Andrei Leonov recorded the final separation of the land from the island due to the melting of the glacier - the new territory reaches 400 meters in length and 121 meters in width.

In total, 28 new islands have been discovered in the country in recent years. All of them are located in northern Russia and consist mainly of glaciers. The largest island is located on Franz Josef Land and has an area of ​​more than 200 square kilometers - this is three times the size of Manhattan.

The discovery of new islands expands the boundaries of the Russian economic zone in the Arctic and the Far North. In addition, new territories may contain oil and gas deposits or access to new species of fish.
