Lin Guozhang, the Democratic Progressive Party candidate for Yilan County magistrate, has recently been targeted by the rival Kuomintang Wu Zongxian camp. In response to criticism of cases handled by lawyers in the past, three major associations, including the National Lawyers Federation, the Taipei Lawyers Association and the Yilan Lawyers Association, issued a rare simultaneous statement yesterday to hit back at the blue camp's manipulation. Lawyer Huang Diying sarcastically called Wu Zongxian the "king of comedy in politics" and attacked Lin Guozhang's past defense cases as exceeding the common sense of the world's rule of law, which instantly angered lawyers across the country.

In response to the Kuomintang and the People's Party's attempts to maliciously connect and discredit Lin Guozhang's defense duties with the client's charges by using Lin Guozhang's past experience in handling cases in accordance with the law, Lin Guozhang's campaign office reiterated yesterday that the Blue and White camp's distortion of lawyers' defense duties has triggered a strong backlash from the legal community. It called on opponents to respect the rule of law and asked Commissioner Wu Zongxian and others to publicly apologize.

Huang Diying pointed out in a Facebook post that KMT legislator Wu Zongxian’s camp attacked Lin Guozhang’s past cases as a lawyer, throwing political dirty water, exceeding the common sense of judicial operation in democratic countries around the world, and triggering public outrage in the legal community. Huang Diying also ridiculed Wu Zongxian as the "king of comedy in politics", which instantly angered lawyers across the country.

Huang Diying said that the three major associations, including the National Lawyers Federation, the Taipei Bar Association and the Yilan Bar Association, issued a rare synchronized statement yesterday afternoon, sternly attacking the blue camp operation, emphasizing that "defending the defendant does not mean endorsing a crime," and sternly calling on political offense and defense to abide by the bottom line of the rule of law and not to trample or stigmatize the country's criminal defense system for electoral interests.

Huang Diying mentioned that the National Lawyers Association, Taipei Lawyers Association, and Yilan Lawyers Association emphasized that the United Nations' "Basic Principles on the Role of Lawyers" and the Council of Europe's "Convention on the Protection of the Lawyers' Profession" clearly stipulate that lawyers should not be regarded as having the same position as their clients. It is an important principle of the rule of law to ensure that lawyers practice independently and that people receive legal assistance.
