Oil prices fell on Thursday after a previous rise, following Iran’s announcement of its openness to diplomacy to end the war with the United States, as Brent crude fell to $102.13 and West Texas Intermediate crude fell to $91.56.

The European Bank for Reconstruction and Development reduced economic growth forecasts for 2026 to 2.5 percent due to the energy and food crises and conflicts, coinciding with the crisis of high diesel prices in the United States and the controversy over the ban on fuel exports.

The administration of US President Donald Trump faces a growing dilemma in the diesel market, as rising prices prompt a search for ways to increase supply within the United States, but Energy Secretary Chris Wright, refineries, and industrial groups warn that banning fuel exports may backfire, by filling storage tanks and reducing refinery operating rates, putting pressure on gasoline and jet fuel supplies, in light of record diesel prices exceeding $6.50 per gallon and widespread disruptions in global fuel supplies due to the war in the Middle East and Ukraine.

The Trump administration is facing increasing pressure as the price of diesel exceeds $6.50 per gallon, amid partisan calls to restrict exports and ministerial and industry warnings that the export ban will reduce refinery operations and raise fuel prices.

Gold prices fell under pressure from expectations that the US Federal Reserve will continue to tighten its monetary policy, while oil prices rose with anticipation of diplomatic talks between the United States and an end to the war with Iran, and preparations for the Trump-Xi Jinping summit in Washington.

Oil prices fell after rising 4% in the previous session, with Iran open to continuing diplomacy to end the war with the United States despite the ongoing dispute. Brent fell 0.9% to $102.16 and West Texas fell 0.8% to $91.39. In financial markets, US 10-year bond yields rose to 5.054%, the highest level since 2007, with global stocks declining, the dollar rising and gold falling, while the US Treasury is preparing to buy back long-term bonds worth up to $6 billion.
