The 2026 Kaohsiung Film Festival launches two major sections: Toronto Asian Film Festival Selection and Children's Fantasyland

[Reporter Xu Shiying/Reporting from Taipei] The 2026 Kaohsiung Film Festival will launch two major sections: "Toronto Asian Film Festival Selection" and "Children's Fantasyland". Among them, "Toronto Asian Film Festival Selection" gathers 4 Asian-themed works, including "Montreal, My Love" starring Golden Horse Award winner Chen Chong and winning the Toronto Film Critics Association Award, and "Seaweed House" winning the Toronto Film Critics FIPRESCI Award, bringing many Taiwan premieres and Asia premieres.

"Toronto Asian Film Festival Selection" continues Xiongying's cooperation with the Toronto Asian Film Festival, focusing on issues such as Asian immigration, identity and belonging. "Montreal, My Love" was directed by He Xiaodan, who used his own immigration experience as inspiration to describe the emotions and situations of Chinese lesbians in immigrant society. Chen Chong also won the Toronto Film Critics Association Award for "Best Leading Performance in a Canadian Film" for his performance in the film.

"Seaweed House" is directed by Meredith. Harma-Brown's first feature film depicts the emotional rift and post-war trauma of a Japanese family through island legends and mysterious ocean imagery. The Korean-American director's "We Are Us", which has been released all week, combines mockumentary, dance and science fiction elements to explore modern people's sense of belonging with the imagination of aliens. The Vietnamese director Le Duc Keenan's "The World's Worst Country" is set in a near-future society and depicts the situation of immigrants and xenophobic issues through daily life.

Another major section, "Children's Fantasyland", targets parent-child audiences and launches four major themes this year. Among them, "The World is a Little Incredible" focuses specifically on the 15th anniversary of the founding of the French animation school "Baotie Animation School". It selects 15 representative works, covering different animation media such as watercolor, paper sculpture, stop-motion, etc., to showcase the imagination of the new generation of French animation creators.

In addition, "Today is also on a mission" brings together clay, wool felt and hand-drawn animations, including Belgian director Marc-Henri. Warnberg's "Puff Star Crisis" and South Korean animation director Jung Seung-bae's "Battery Grandma"; "Bad Weather Escape Guide" and "Friends' Miraculous Daily Life" feature themes of growth, courage and companionship, and bring together animation works from Sweden, Lithuania, Poland and other places to allow fans of all ages to explore different forms of animation creation.

The 2026 Kaohsiung Film Festival will be held from October 9 to 26 at the Kaohsiung Film Center, Neiwei Art Center, Kaohsiung Municipal Library Main Building, VR Somatosensory Theater, Pier 2 Art Zone and LIVE WAREHOUSE.
