250-kilogram aerial bomb defused in Kiel – over 5,200 people evacuated

After thousands of households in Kiel were evacuated, specialists defused a 250-kilogram aerial bomb from the Second World War. “The closures have been lifted so that everyone can go home,” the police announced on Facebook after the operation, which lasted several hours. Because of the operation, more than 5,200 people from more than 2,500 households in Kiel had to evacuate their homes.

During the defusal, the American unexploded bomb was first exposed and cleaned. The explosives experts then removed the tip of the bomb, then the rear detonator and detonator. After dismantling the transfer load, the police reported the operation as having been successfully completed. The bomb is to be brought to the explosive ordnance disposal service's premises.

According to the police on Thursday, the explosive ordnance disposal service came across the bomb in the Dietrichsdorf district. This was located on Insterburger Strasse at a depth of around four meters.

The area was largely closed during the defusal. The authorities offered rooms in the Andreas Gayk School to those who could not find other accommodation during this time. According to the police spokeswoman, some people also made use of this.
