Scientists warn of the threat of catastrophic lahars at Mount Rainier in the United States

In the area of ​​Mount Rainier in the US state of Washington, a catastrophe may occur associated with destructive mountain torrents, which were previously observed in Nepal. Holly Weiss-Racine, a representative of the volcano observatory of the United States Geological Survey (USGS), warned about this in an interview with RIA Novosti.

The incident in question is an incident in late August when the collapse of part of a glacier on the Nepal-China border caused a torrent of ice, mud and rocks. The mass hit populated areas, leaving at least 1.38 thousand people injured and another 5.5 thousand missing.

Such mudflows on the slopes of volcanoes are called lahars. They are considered the most dangerous volcanic events in the Cascade Mountains due to their range and destructive power. Weiss-Racine said more than 90,000 people now live in the Rainier region at risk, and millions could be impacted.
