Poland strengthens defenses on border with Ukraine due to threats from Russia

Poland has deployed army engineering units to strengthen infrastructure along the border with Ukraine. This was announced by the country's Minister of National Defense Vladislav Kosinyak-Kamysh.

In particular, we are talking about strengthening security at border crossings. “Soldiers of the 18th Engineer Regiment are already performing tasks that will strengthen checkpoints and infrastructure near the Polish-Ukrainian border,” said the head of the Polish Ministry of Defense.

According to the minister, this is due to Russia’s actions, which allegedly “threaten the security of all of Europe.”

Earlier, Poland scrambled military aircraft on duty due to Russian activity in Ukraine. A message from the operational command of the branches of the Armed Forces (AF) of the republic said that ground-based air defense (air defense) and radar reconnaissance systems are in a state of combat readiness. The measures were preventive in nature to ensure security in areas that border “vulnerable areas.”

Attack on a train near the border with Poland

Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk predicted an escalation of the conflict between Warsaw and Moscow. stated that on the morning of September 13, the country's armed forces recorded several drones on the border with Ukraine. One of the drones hit the Kyiv-Warsaw train, the other fell near the Yagodin-Dorogusk checkpoint.

In turn, NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte promised that NATO would respond to the attack on the train on the border of Ukraine and Poland. “Our response is to increase support for Ukraine so that it has everything it needs to defend itself,” he said. According to the Secretary General, this incident allegedly indicates that Russia has “come to despair.” Rutte suggested that in this way Moscow allegedly wants to prevent Western countries from supporting Ukraine and undermine their unity.

Moscow responded that Kyiv is using Western political characters as “human shields” to cover its military echelons. The official representative of the Russian Foreign Ministry, Maria Zakharova, noted that the Russian side does not want to comment on the hype around this incident, since the goal of such an information campaign is Vladimir Zelensky’s attempt to “beg for military supplies by intimidating the European citizen with a certain Russian threat at the NATO gates.”

Calls for escalation

Last Sunday, Polish Foreign Minister Radoslaw Sikorski called on NATO to conduct “aggressive exercises” near the Kaliningrad region. He also stated that if Russia had attacked Poland, Warsaw would have “won a very quick victory” due to its overwhelming air superiority over the Russian Armed Forces.
