A man surnamed Lai was beaten by three people and his vision was reduced to light perception. The Taichung High Court upheld the original verdict of the first instance.

A man surnamed Wang from Nantou County was dissatisfied that his brother was beaten by a man surnamed Lai, so he called in two employees to help. They suppressed Lai, beat him violently with a plastic chair, and even fell on the table. He was punched in the head and face, causing a rupture in his left eye and leaving only light perception. The three people later argued that Lai's injuries had nothing to do with them and blamed Lai for not returning to the doctor on time and having a fight. After the Nantou District Court sentenced him, the second instance recently upheld the original sentences of April 3 and February 3, respectively.

The verdict pointed out that at about 6 a.m. on June 2, 2022, Lai Nan had a conflict with Wang Nan’s brother in an arcade in Nantou, causing the other party to be injured and bleed. After learning about it, Wang Nan rushed to the scene to argue. The two sides disagreed and the conflict started again. Wang Nan immediately joined forces with two employees, Yan Nan and Chen Nan, to attack. The attack on Lai Nan caused subdural hemorrhage, rupture of the globe in his left eye and multiple contusions all over his body. He went to the doctor urgently that day and underwent eyeball suturing, and later underwent retinal detachment and reattachment surgery. However, the vision of his left eye was still severely impaired, leaving only "light perception", and his life was left with permanent damage.

After the incident, although the three people admitted that they did commit the crime, they were unwilling to admit responsibility for causing serious injuries. They even claimed that Lai Nan delayed treatment, failed to return to the clinic regularly, and later got into a fight with others, which led to the blindness in his left eye. However, after investigating the medical records and the hospital's letter, the court determined that Lai Nan had sought medical treatment on the day of the beating. The deterioration of the vision in his left eye was related to the severe trauma to the eyeball, and was not caused by failure to return to the clinic regularly.

Although the three people did not prove any conspiracy beforehand, the division of labor to suppress and attack each other at the scene, especially the continuous violence against the head and face, was enough to foresee the possibility of serious injury. According to the crime of joint injury causing serious injury, Wang Nan and Chen Nan were sentenced to three years and April each, and Yan Nan was sentenced to three years and February. The three people appealed to the Taichung High Court. The second instance found that the first instance sentencing was not inappropriate, dismissed the appeal, and upheld the original sentence. It has not yet been determined.
