Iranian authorities consider there is a high probability of escalation of the conflict with the United States after the midterm congressional elections on November 3 and do not expect to reach an agreement on the cessation of hostilities and the opening of the Strait of Hormuz before the vote, Bloomberg reports, citing sources.

“The Islamic Republic considers the likelihood of an escalation of the conflict after the November 3 vote to be high,” the agency writes.

According to the agency, in private conversations, Iranian officials have expressed pessimism about the prospects for an end to hostilities and the opening of the Strait of Hormuz before the November 3 elections. The contacts between the parties last week on the sidelines of the UN General Assembly brought almost no results.

At the same time, Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araqchi remains in the United States to continue negotiations through intermediaries represented by Pakistan and Qatar. The meeting with their participation is taking place on Monday without representatives from Washington, the publication notes.

Previously, Tehran offered to open the strait in seven days in exchange for lifting the naval blockade and restrictions on oil exports, but US President Donald Trump rejected these conditions on September 27.
