Deaths in Tibet due to Himalayan glacier collapse rise to 31

(Beijing = Yonhap News) Correspondent Jeong Seong-jo = The number of deaths in China's Tibet (Xichang) region due to major flooding and debris flows that occurred in the Himalayan mountainous region on the border between Nepal and China has increased to 31.

According to Xinhua News Agency on the 4th, as of 6 PM (local time) on this day, the number of deaths on the Chinese side was 31 and the number of people missing was 531.

The missing included foreigners from 23 countries, including Nepal, India, Latvia, the United States, and the United Kingdom. As of China's announcement on the 30th of last month (16 dead, 546 missing as of 6 p.m. on the 29th), the number of missing foreigners was 261. There were no Korean nationals among those missing in the Tibetan region.

China did not separately disclose the number of foreigners in its announcement of deaths and disappearances.

This disaster occurred on the 26th of last month when the glacier in Langtang Lirung, Nepal, collapsed at about 5,200 meters above sea level.

A large-scale landslide and debris flow caused by a glacier collapse swept down at a high speed for about 22 km and struck Keelung Trade District, Tibet (Xizang) Autonomous Region, at about 1,800 meters above sea level. The damaged area was found to be approximately 100 soccer fields.
