Unicef delivers 84 tonnes of humanitarian aid to Nepal after devastating floods

Unicef ​​announced in a press release that it had transported 84 tonnes of emergency humanitarian supplies to Nepal on the morning of Friday September 4 to help children and families affected by the devastating flood which left at least 1,259 dead and more than 5,000 missing. “A plane carrying 84 tonnes of humanitarian supplies landed this morning in Kathmandu, Nepal, with the support of humanitarian aid from the European Union,” Unicef ​​wrote in its press release.

“Among the essential equipment delivered were acute watery diarrhea (AWD) kits and diagnostic equipment, water tanks, hygiene kits and water treatment products, tents, winter clothing kits for infants and children, and educational materials.” According to Unicef, these supplies will allow families to “access drinking water” and “strengthen disease prevention”.

Nine days ago, the collapse of a glacier and a section of a mountain on the border of Nepal and China caused an immense wall of icy water, rocks and debris which surged downstream and swept away everything in its path. The United Nations launched an urgent appeal on Friday for nearly $50 million to help the more than 84,000 people affected.
