31-year-old runner dies after collapsing during Monsoon Marathon at Nandi Hills

31-year-old runner Amandeep Singh Jagade succumbed after collapsing mid-race during the 21km course

CHIKKABALLAPUR: A 31-year-old runner died after collapsing during Monsoon Marathon at Nandi Hills Sunday morning. He is suspected to have suffered a cardiac arrest.

Amandeep Singh Jagade, a Punjab native, was living in Bengaluru and working for a private company at Manyata Tech Park. The marathon, organised at Nandi Hills, featured 10km and 21km categories and drew more than 4,500 participants. Amandeep was taking part in the 21km run when he collapsed while descending the hill around 9.10am, after completing about half the route.

He was immediately taken to Sri Madhusudan Sai Institute of Medical Sciences and Research Hospital in Muddenahalli, where the doctors attempted to revive him. However, he was declared dead. His body has been kept at the hospital mortuary, while Nandi Giridhama police are awaiting the arrival of his family to conduct the post-mortem examination. Police have registered a case of unnatural death and are investigating. The marathon began around 6.30am.

Fellow participant V Kamalanath of KGF said Amandeep appeared energetic during the run and was seen raising patriotic slogans, including “Vande Mataram” and “Bharat Mata Ki Jai”, while encouraging other runners. “Until he collapsed, Aman looked quite fit and enthusiastic. He had participated in several marathon events earlier and had very recently taken part in a Hyrox event, which he won,” Kamalanath said.

According to Kamalanath, Amandeep appeared exhausted after completing about half the route. He was taken to a medical camp at Nandi Hills, where he was given preliminary treatment. “As his condition deteriorated, he was shifted in an ambulance. CPR was performed near the entrance to the hills before he was rushed to hospital. However, he succumbed,” he said.

Kamalanath said the organisers had obtained disclaimers from participants and collected details about their previous participation in marathons and similar events. Amandeep had also posted about the event on Instagram before the event, referring to his participation in the 21km run and writing, “God is with me.” The post has since taken on a poignant significance following his death.

The second edition of the Monsoon Marathon was organised in collaboration with the Karnataka department of youth empowerment and sports and the district administrations of Chikkaballapur and Bengaluru Rural, police said.
