U.S. President Trump and Chinese President Xi Jinping held bilateral talks at the White House. KMT Chairman Cheng Li-wen said, "Trump and Xi can talk, and President Lai Ching-te should open the door to cross-strait dialogue." In response, the Democratic Progressive Party responded today (25th) that the door to dialogue between Taiwan and the world has never been closed. The government and the opposition should jointly call on the Chinese authorities to open the red door locked behind differences and ideologies and step out bravely.

Cheng Lai-wen said through a press release that in the face of the rapidly changing international situation after the Trump-Xi meeting, Lai Ching-te should fully explain to the people the government's latest assessment of U.S.-China relations and the cross-strait situation. He should also take the initiative to propose specific plans to reduce risks in the Taiwan Strait and restore cross-strait communication. He should also take the security and interests of the Taiwanese people into consideration, try to open the door to cross-strait dialogue, strive for peace for Taiwan, and reduce the risk of war.

In this regard, the Democratic Progressive Party pointed out that as a democratic country, Taiwan interacts with the world and the door to dialogue with the world has never been closed. On the contrary, the Beijing authorities continue to make various excuses and always refuse to dialogue and communicate with our country in a reciprocal and mutually respectful manner. They even continue to escalate various military and other composite threats to Taiwan and the region. This is the crux of the current cross-strait issues.

The DPP questioned that even if there are huge differences between the United States and China, Beijing is still willing to sit down and talk to the United States in accordance with international norms. Why is it always glaring at Taiwan and countries surrounding the island chain? How can it manage differences like this?

The DPP said that in the face of rapidly changing regional and international situations, both the government and the opposition should be united in dealing with the outside world on the premise that national interests are given priority and people's freedom and well-being are given priority and cannot be exchanged. We jointly call on the Chinese authorities to return to the track of the rules-based international order, open the red door locked behind differences and ideologies, and step out bravely. We believe that on the basis of equality and mutual respect, there is nothing that the two sides of the Taiwan Strait cannot dialogue with.

The Democratic Progressive Party also emphasized that instead of blaming Taiwan Strait and regional issues on the threatened party, Cheng Lai-wen should work together to let the Beijing authorities know that no one can divide Taiwanese people before national interests.
