Trump-Xi summit ends: Both sides agree to establish artificial intelligence dialogue channel

The three-day summit between U.S. President Trump and Chinese President Xi Jinping ended on the 25th. According to the minutes of the summit results released by the White House and China, Trump and Xi Jinping agreed to establish an artificial intelligence (AI) dialogue and communication channel. However, the White House used the "super wisdom" language proposed by Trump and said Xi Jinping also agreed. In response, the Chinese Ministry of Foreign Affairs stated that it respects the US wording.

The White House released the fact list of the summit on the 25th and the eight consensuses announced by China pointed out that the two sides agreed to establish an artificial intelligence dialogue and establish a bilateral communication channel for artificial intelligence events to exchange views on the risks and benefits related to artificial intelligence. The next dialogue will be held in November this year.

However, the White House's list of facts used the term "superintelligence" (SI) proposed by Trump instead of "artificial intelligence" (AI), and stated that "the leaders of both countries agreed to use 'superintelligence' rather than 'artificial intelligence' to describe this emerging technology." The 8-point consensus announced by China did not mention that the two reached a consensus on switching to "super intelligence."

Agence France-Presse reported on the 26th that Trump had just announced a few days ago that his government would rename AI "superintelligence" in official documents. After his meeting with Xi Jinping, he also wrote that Xi Jinping "seems to like changing the bad and inaccurate name of artificial intelligence to a more accurate and important name, superintelligence."

China has not explicitly confirmed or denied Trump's account of the conversation. However, the Chinese Ministry of Foreign Affairs issued a statement on the 26th, saying, "On the issue of artificial intelligence expression, China attaches great importance to the US position and respects the US proposal." The statement was explained in the form of a question and answer, pointing out that the leaders of the two countries had in-depth discussions on the issue of artificial intelligence during their talks. This technology is continuing to develop, and all parties can strengthen exchanges, in-depth discussions, and seek consensus based on the latest situation.
