House Speaker Johnson reiterates support for Taiwan, estimating arms sales to reach US$40 billion during Trump's two terms

In response to the U.S. policy toward Taiwan after the "Second Meeting between Trump and Xi", U.S. House Speaker Mike Johnson reiterated the U.S.'s firm support for Taiwan on the 28th and estimated that total arms sales to Taiwan during President Trump's two terms will reach as high as 40 billion U.S. dollars (approximately NT$1.27 trillion), which is approximately twice that of former Democratic President Obama.

In response to Chinese President Xi Jinping's appeal to Trump to reduce support for Taiwan, and the fact that a US$14 billion arms sale to Taiwan has been shelved for several months, Johnson & Johnson stressed in an interview with FOX Business that the delay in arms sales was mainly due to the crowding-out effect of the situation in the Middle East and the conflict with Iran, and the outside world should not overly interpret this as a bargaining chip in negotiations with China.

Johnson emphasized: "I don't think anyone can question the determination of the United States. We understand that Taiwan is our very important partner, friend and ally. We need them to remain stable and independent." He reiterated that this is crucial to the national security of the United States and the global economy. "You can expect the United States to continue to maintain this position in the future."

Johnson & Johnson specifically presented data to support the U.S.'s defense commitment: "During President Trump's two terms, he is expected to complete US$40 billion in arms sales to Taiwan, which is approximately double the amount under President Obama."

Regarding bilateral relations between the United States and China, Johnson & Johnson affirmed Trump's diplomatic dialogue with China, but warned that he must remain highly vigilant against threats from China. He accused China of stealing intellectual property, expanding its military, and trying to exert malign influence on the American people: "President Trump is right to emphasize diplomacy and bilateral relations, but we must remain cautious and continue to take precautions."

In response to the competition between the United States and China in the field of artificial intelligence (AI), Johnson & Johnson reiterated its opposition to suspending the development of AI or implementing overly strict regulations. He pointed out that stifling innovation with red tape will only lead to the United States giving up dominance to China in the technological competition. He will meet with Trump and top executives of AI companies to demand that the industry take responsibility and continue to maintain the United States' overwhelming advantage in cutting-edge technology while ensuring transparency and appropriate supervision.
