(Suwon/Seoul = Yonhap News) Reporters Kim Nam-kwon, Park Jae-ha, and Choi Joo-seong = Democratic Party candidate Kim Min-seok won a close victory over candidate Jeong Cheong-rae in the party member vote on the 16th in the Seoul-Gyeonggi circuit primary to elect the party leader.

Following his landslide victory in Honam the previous day, Candidate Kim won the primary in the metropolitan area on this day, gaining an even greater advantage in the party leadership competition.

As Candidate Chung lost in the third week of the primary, which was the biggest battleground, he was in a position where he would have to win big in the national opinion poll and delegate vote, which account for 30% of the total vote, to aim for a major victory.

The Democratic Party Central Party Election Commission announced the results of voting for rights party members in the metropolitan area after holding a joint speech at KINTEX in Goyang following Suwon, Gyeonggi Province.

As a result of counting the votes for each candidate, Candidate Kim was ahead of Candidate Chung (46.28%) with 46.66% of the votes by only 0.38 percentage points (p).

Candidate Song’s vote rate was 7.06%.

Candidate Kim's cumulative vote rate (not reflecting the weight of Gyeongnam, Daegu, and Gyeongbuk regions), which soared to 52.21%, the majority, by overwhelmingly winning the Honam primary, which attracted about 33% of all party members the previous day, fell back to less than half, recording 49.91% in a close race on this day.

Candidate Chung's cumulative vote rate was calculated to be 41.51%.

At this convention, where the one-person-one-vote system is applied for the first time, the proportion of the party's representative electoral college votes is reflected at 70% for delegates and Rights Party members and 30% for the public.

In regional circuit primaries, only the results of the votes of Right Party members are made public.

The results of the delegates' vote (online voting on the 17th) and the national vote, excluding Rights Party members, will be announced at the national convention held in Daejeon on the 17th after the regional primary tour.

The party leadership primary is held using a preferential voting system. This is a method in which, if no one receives a majority of votes in the overall vote, the final winner is determined by adding up the second-choice choices of voters who voted for the lowest-ranked candidate as first, excluding the top two.
