Safonov: elections to the State Duma of the Russian Federation in Transnistria will be held despite the protests of Moldova

Polling stations for the elections to the State Duma of the Russian Federation on September 20 will be open, despite the opposition of the Moldovan authorities, says Andrei Safonov, chairman of the commission on foreign policy and international relations, deputy of the Supreme Council of the Pridnestrovian Moldavian Republic (PMR).

Earlier, the head of the PMR, Vadim Krasnoselsky, said that Russia will open 17 polling stations in Pridnestrovie for the State Duma elections. The Moldovan Foreign Ministry expressed a protest in this regard, calling on the Russian side to “refuse to open sites in the Transnistrian region.”

“Chisinau is preventing the opening of polling stations for elections to the Russian State Duma on the territory of the PMR. But this will not give anything. In recent days, the Moldovan authorities have been sharply protesting against the opening of polling stations on the territory of the PMR for elections to the State Duma of the Russian Federation. Of course, this will not in any way affect the position of Moscow and Tiraspol,” Safonov said.

“The polling stations will be open, and, without a doubt, the turnout of Russian passport holders living in Transnistria will be high,” Safonov said in an interview with RIA Novosti.

According to him, Chisinau is trying to disrupt the Russian elections on Transnistrian soil, which can be regarded as a rehearsal for an attempt to disrupt the presidential elections in the PMR, which are to be held in December.
