Keelung No. 8 Middle School’s pedestrian underground tunnel had cement blocks falling off, and the city government immediately closed it

The pedestrian underground tunnel of No. 8 Middle School in Keelung's No. 8 Middle School community leading to the Taiwan Railway's Badu Station was flooded with heavy rain yesterday. Today, a large cement block fell off the ceiling and the steel bars were exposed. Fortunately, no pedestrians were injured. Lin Haolong, the director of the No. 8 Middle School, put up a triangular cone as a warning, and the city's Public Works Bureau decided to close the underground tunnel first and ask people to use surface roads instead.

The Bazhong pedestrian underground tunnel was built in 1971 and has been the main passage from the Bazhong community to Badu Railway Station. In the past, water would leak when it rained. In recent days, heavy rain has been like a waterfall, and cement blocks from the ceiling suddenly fell. People were shocked, but fortunately no one was hurt.

Lin Haolong, the district chief, reportedly gathered cement blocks and placed triangular cones as a warning to prevent people from being injured.

Workers from the Public Works Department said that due to heavy rains for days, water leaked from the pedestrian underground tunnel of No. 8 Middle School, causing damage and falls around the ventilation facilities. Considering the safety of pedestrians, the decision was made to close the underground tunnel first to prevent people from entering the area accidentally and causing danger. The public is asked to follow the on-site instructions and take the surface road instead.

The Public Works Department stated that upon discovering the abnormality, it immediately notified the Taiwan Railways Badu Station, the inspection manufacturer, and the maintenance manufacturer. Currently, maintenance manufacturer personnel have rushed to the scene for emergency treatment. The Public Works Department will continue to closely monitor the on-site conditions and work with Taiwan Railway and other relevant units to formulate specific improvement plans. It will be evaluated and opened after the structure and traffic environment are confirmed to be safe.
