The social workers union demands an apology for speaking out on drug issues. Li Yanxiu: I agree with the position of social workers’ functions.

In response to Kuomintang legislator Li Yanxiu's speech on the drug issue, Shen Yaoyi, vice chairman of the Taipei City Social Workers Professional Union, today criticized the Blue Camp for distorting the public health harm reduction mechanism and the social work profession, and called on Li Yanxiu to apologize. Li Yanxiu pointed out that he fully agreed with the "All Federation of Social Workers" propositions on anti-drug policies and the functions of social workers.

Li Yanxiu pointed out through a press release that she firmly opposed the Democratic Progressive Party's Taipei mayoral candidate Shen Boyang's past proposal to "establish community centers to provide drug users with drugs and clean needles, and introduce social work mechanisms to assist." Social workers are not drug providers, and they should not harm social workers’ roles and functions and community safety.

Li Yanxiu said that addiction prevention and harm reduction should follow the current practice of "medical institutions providing methadone replacement therapy." The patients must take the medication in the hospital under the visual inspection of medical staff.

Li Yanxiu pointed out that social workers are the "guardians of the social safety net" and the ones who light up the darkness. She has long been concerned about social workers' long working hours, excessive pressure, inadequate working conditions and other issues, and strives for the rights of social workers. She has great admiration and respect for the professionalism and dedication of grassroots social workers. The rights and interests of social workers should not become a tool for political struggle and smear.

Li Yanxiu recently said that the community is a place where people dance and exercise every day. In the future, it may become a place where social workers provide drugs and medicines to treat addicts. What a harm it is to the community. The Taipei City Social Workers Professional Union was dissatisfied with the relevant remarks and went to Li Yanxiu's service office to protest, demanding that Li Yanxiu publicly apologize.

Shen Yaoyi, vice-chairman of the Taipei City Social Workers Professional Union, posted two posts on Facebook today. He pointed out that under union fans or articles demanding an apology from Li Yanxiu, people often ask why Shen Boyang is not asked to apologize. Even Taipei Mayor Chiang Wanan and Li Yanxiu both accused Shen Boyang's articles of causing panic. "I really want to faint. I really treat social workers like idiots for saying this."

Shen Yaoyi explained in a telephone interview with the media that knowledgeable people will know that the public health harm reduction medical system is to make people who are willing to quit drug addiction "accessible" to receive resources. The object is to "assist people who want to quit drug addiction" and "is not to give drugs to people who have not taken drugs."

Shen Yaoyi once again named Li Yanxiu, and the All-China Federation of Federation made a clear request for an apology, "If you really agree, do you need to apologize properly? Or are you just perfunctory to the public and say that you agree, but in fact you continue to make false remarks, mobilize the emotions of these Internet people, and tear apart our mutual understanding and understanding?"
