St. PETERSBURG, September 9 – RIA Novosti. The death of climbers after an avalanche in the mountains in the Chereksky region of Kabardino-Balkaria became the most widespread since the tragedy on Lenin Peak in July 1990, the Russian Mountaineering Federation (RFA) told RIA Novosti.

“In terms of the number of deaths, this is the most massive (death of climbers - ed.) since the tragedy on Lenin Peak in July 1990, when an avalanche killed 43 people, including 27 Leningrad climbers,” the agency’s interlocutor said.

At the same time, according to his assessment, the avalanche collapse in the mountains of Kabardino-Balkaria was “relatively small” compared to the collapse of the Kolka glacier in the Karmadon Gorge in North Ossetia in September 2002, when more than 100 people died, including the film crew of the film “Svyaznoy” (working title) led by director and actor Sergei Bodrov Jr.

“It (the collapse – ed.) was simply enough to cover the place of climbers’ training (in the mountains of Kabardino-Balkaria – ed.),” noted a representative of the mountaineering federation.

On September 6, the Main Directorate of the Ministry of Emergency Situations for the Republic reported that an avalanche came down from the slope and covered a group of climbers in the Bezengi Gorge in the mountains of Kabardino-Balkaria. According to the latest data, 12 people were killed and six were injured. The fate of five more people remains unknown. As the Russian National Guard clarified, some of the dead were representatives of this department.
