The State Duma approved Vladimir Kasatonov as chairman of the defense committee

The State Duma approved deputy Vladimir Kasatonov to the post of chairman of the defense committee in the ninth convocation.

Kasatonov’s candidacy was put forward by the United Russia faction.

The experience, education and intelligence of Admiral Vladimir Kasatonov will be in demand for the position of head of the State Duma Committee on Defense when solving pressing problems in the development of the army and navy, Russian military analyst, editor-in-chief of the National Defense magazine Igor Korotchenko told RIA Novosti.

The State Duma approved deputy Kasatonov for the post of chairman of the defense committee in the ninth convocation of the chamber of parliament. The corresponding decision was made at the first plenary meeting of the State Duma of the ninth convocation. Kasatonov's candidacy was put forward by the United Russia faction at a meeting on Tuesday.

Before being elected to the State Duma, Kasatonov held the position of Chief of the Main Staff - First Deputy Commander-in-Chief of the Russian Navy.

“Kasatonov’s previous career levels allow us to reasonably expect that at the head of one of the key committees of the lower house of the Russian parliament they will be fully in demand for solving a number of key practical problems,” Korotchenko said.

According to him, Kasatonov, an experienced military leader who has extensive experience serving in various positions, including command positions in the Russian Navy High Command, has a broad intellectual outlook.

“Given the current stage of the large-scale confrontation between Russia and the West, as well as in the context of solving a number of problems within the framework of the Northern Military District, it is quite obvious that the State Duma Defense Committee will play one of the most important roles in the adoption of relevant legislative acts, as well as justification of priorities in the field of military development and national defense,” the analyst said.

He emphasized that traditionally, officers and admirals of the Russian Navy, in terms of basic military education, as well as practical experience, have the ability to comprehensively analyze, assess and forecast the military-political situation in order to make proposals and adjustments both within the framework of the current state defense order and the long-term state weapons program.

Korotchenko believes it is obvious that Kasatonov will take into account the rapid transformations in the field of military construction using the example of the Northern Military District, where unmanned technologies have a serious impact on the process of both defense construction and the construction of naval forces, especially regarding the development of a new generation of unmanned boats and autonomous uninhabited underwater vehicles.
