Media outlets that repeatedly violate rights must be managed separately

(Seoul = Yonhap News) Reporter Park Gyeong-jun = It has been pointed out that despite receiving repeated recommendations for correction from the Press Arbitration Commission due to rights violations due to media reports, the same type of rights violations are not being eradicated as proper punishment has not been implemented.

According to data submitted by the National Assembly's Culture, Sports and Tourism Committee and released on the 27th by Representative Lim Oh-kyung of the Democratic Party of Korea from the National Assembly's Culture, Sports and Tourism Committee, there were 328 cases in which the same type of rights infringement was recommended for correction three or more times a half-year from the first half of 2024 to the first half of this year.

If the same type of infringement is repeated three or more times per half year, the National Intermediary Commission notifies the relevant media company of the contents of the corrective action in an official document and publishes it on the committee's website.

There were 206 cases in which no action was taken despite receiving correction recommendations three or more times, accounting for 62.8% of the total.

There were only 75 cases of articles being revised after receiving correction recommendations, and only 74 cases of deletion.

It was found that one media company repeated the same type of rights infringement 12 times per half year.

Rep. Lim analyzed that follow-up corrective measures are not properly implemented due to the lack of effectiveness of the corrective recommendation system.

Rep. Lim pointed out, “There is no follow-up action in 6 out of 10 cases that receive recommendations for correction, and if the same mistake is repeated up to 12 times, it means that the system is not working properly,” and added, “Media companies that repeatedly violate rights must be managed separately.”

He added, "After the corrective recommendation, we need to track the correction or deletion of problematic articles and whether the same cases recur, and manage the results to see how much incorrect reporting has actually decreased."
