연구팀은 하루 음주량을 남성 30g 미만, 여성 20g 미만이면 적당 수준 이하의 음주로 분류했다. 이를 일반적인 술로 환산하면 알코올 20g은 소주 2∼3잔, 30g은 소주 3∼4잔 안팎에 해당한다.
분석 결과 보통 수준의 음주를 하는 사람 가운데 공복혈당장애가 있는 사람의 대장암 위험은 정상혈당이면서 술을 마시지 않는 사람에 견줘 23% 높았으며, 당뇨병 환자는 이런 위험이 48%까지 상승했다.
혈당이 높은 사람에게는 술이 대장암 위험을 더 키우는 요인으로 작용할 수 있음을 보여주는 대목이다.
과음하는 경우에는 차이가 더 커졌다. 정상혈당·비음주자와 비교한 대장암 위험이 정상혈당 과음군에서는 17%, 공복혈당장애 과음군에서는 41%, 당뇨병 과음군에서는 77% 높았다.
특히 이번 연구에서는 공복혈당장애나 당뇨병이 있는 사람이 술을 마시면, 두 위험 요인이 각각 미치는 영향을 단순히 합친 것보다 대장암 위험이 더 커지는 '상승작용'도 관찰됐다.

연구팀은 "보통 이하의 음주에서도 대장암 위험 증가와의 연관성이 확인됐고, 특히 공복혈당장애나 당뇨병이 있는 사람에게서 이런 연관성이 두드러졌다"면서 "혈당 대사에 이상이 있는 사람일수록 알코올 섭취를 최소화하는 것이 대장암 위험을 낮추는 데 도움이 될 수 있다"고 말했다.
