——A summary of the Asia-Pacific Media High-end Forum
On September 5, the Asia-Pacific Media High-end Forum with the theme of "Building a Road to Prosperity for the Asia-Pacific Community: Media Consensus and Action" was held in Shenzhen, Guangdong. As an important part of the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) "Year of China" series of activities, the forum is hosted by the Propaganda Department of the CPC Central Committee, Xinhua News Agency, the Guangdong Provincial People's Government, and hosted by the Shenzhen Municipal People's Government. More than 400 representatives from more than 40 countries and regions, as well as United Nations agencies and international organizations, focused on deepening media cooperation in the Asia-Pacific, building consensus on development through dialogue, expanding communication through collaboration, and contributing media power to promote growth and prosperity in the Asia-Pacific.
From consensus to action
APEC's "Year of China" proposed three priority areas of "openness, innovation and cooperation" and outlined the path forward for Asia-Pacific cooperation, which aroused widespread resonance among the guests attending the meeting.
Currently, global economic growth faces multiple challenges. "In this context, the role of the Asia-Pacific as a growth engine has become more prominent, and deepening cooperation through the APEC mechanism is crucial to regional development." Dmitry Gornostayev, vice president of Russia Today Media Group, said that the priority areas identified by China meet the needs of all parties, which is also the mission of media people.
“Openness is the only way to enhance mutual understanding between different societies.” Pratawi Amida, Deputy State Secretary of the Ministry of Information of Cambodia, said that the media shoulders the important responsibility of promoting constructive dialogue, publishing accurate information, and bringing people closer. A diverse and responsible media environment will make important contributions to regional peace, stability and development.
"Artificial intelligence and digital platforms are profoundly changing the information ecology and news consumption patterns." Felix Paz, president of the Peruvian Andes News Agency, believes that technological innovation has greatly improved information dissemination capabilities, and the key lies in how to steadily promote digital transformation while adhering to journalistic responsibilities. He suggested that Asia-Pacific media actively share digital transformation experiences, promote professional exchanges, and explore responsible artificial intelligence applications.
"The Asia-Pacific region is surging with vigorous economic vitality, surging waves of technological innovation, blooming brilliant and diverse cultures, and connecting countries and regions with different historical contexts, observation perspectives and media traditions." Costas Economou, senior vice president of CNN, said that diversity should not be seen as an obstacle, but should be turned into a source of strength. This requires Asia-Pacific media to continuously deepen cooperation with stronger industry networks, more adequate exchanges of knowledge and experience, and collaboration that transcends national boundaries and regions.
At the forum, 16 Chinese and foreign media initiated the establishment of the Asia-Pacific Media Partner Program Preparatory Committee; the participating representatives reached the "Shenzhen Consensus of the Asia-Pacific Media High-end Forum" focusing on open cooperation, digital, intelligent, green transformation, and media exchanges; the media cooperation action "Go to Shenzhen to Create a Better Asia-Pacific" was officially launched, focusing on technology sharing, content co-creation, and talent co-education... One after another, pragmatic results have built bridges and accumulated potential for Asia-Pacific media cooperation.
"We bring together the voices of Asia and the Pacific to talk about growth and prosperity, and to jointly explore solutions to the world's most pressing problems." said Melissa Fleming, United Nations Under-Secretary-General for Global Communications.
"The Asia-Pacific Media High-end Forum allows all parties to think together about how to contribute to building an open, dynamic, strong, and peaceful Asia-Pacific community." Kevakamo Pitakmonjit, Executive Director of the Pacific Economic Cooperation Council Secretariat, said that meaningful dialogue helps all parties listen to diverse voices and bring together a wider range of perspectives, thereby reducing misunderstandings, seeking common interests, enhancing the mutual trust required for cooperation, and meeting challenges with a longer-term perspective.
From innovation to application
From the full-process intelligent media suite, to the embodied intelligence of human-machine collaboration, to the intelligent response of urban governance, the scientific and technological innovation achievements displayed at the Asia-Pacific Media High-end Forum allowed delegates to experience the charm of China's intelligent manufacturing from a distance.
When cutting-edge technology and media applications deeply collide, what kind of sparks will be created? Both parties to the dialogue only need to wear an artificial intelligence simultaneous interpretation headset to cross language barriers and communicate face-to-face freely; wear augmented reality glasses to quickly generate high-definition images; a set of lightweight equipment allows reporters to independently complete the entire process of interviewing and editing... Sen Sang, director of the Public Relations Department of the Royal Academy of Cambodia and policy analyst, said: "Cambodia hopes to introduce relevant technologies."
Guo Kaitian, senior vice president of Tencent Group, said that the application of artificial intelligence and other technologies to the media is to liberate reporters from repetitive and time-consuming labor and devote more energy to important work. Tencent actively participates in this change by launching related artificial intelligence products.
Before the opening of the forum, representatives visited Guangzhou, Foshan, Dongguan, Shenzhen, Zhuhai, Zhongshan and other places. The subway that travels underground fully at a speed of 160 kilometers per hour, the "century project" Hong Kong-Zhuhai-Macao Bridge that alternates between sea bridge decks and deep-sea tunnels, substations that use artificial intelligence algorithms to achieve all-weather autonomous inspections, unmanned docks supported by Beidou navigation, 5G communications, artificial intelligence, driverless and other technologies... Feel the achievements of Chinese modernization while walking, and think about the way of collaborative development through experience.
Representatives saw the surging momentum of technological innovation. Tatyana Kokenova, director of Kazakhstan’s Belt and Road Experts Club, lamented: “This visit made me feel that China is paying more and more attention to using scientific and technological innovation to improve people’s lives. These practices and experiences are worth learning from.”
The representatives saw the “problem-solving ideas” for industrial transformation. Dahlan Dahi, CEO of Indonesian Forum News, said: "Chinese brands not only work hard on technological research and development, but also take the initiative to optimize products based on consumer needs in different countries and regional markets, making them a trendy choice for many young consumers."
Delegates saw the "key interface" for win-win cooperation. Anish Chand, editor-in-chief of the digital edition of "Fiji Times" said frankly: "I am curious and looking forward to these new technologies. If they can be introduced, they will definitely help the development of related industries in our country."
The delegates also saw the real opportunities China has brought to regional and even world peace and development by joining hands with all parties to build an Asia-Pacific community. As John Wallace, executive director of the Australian Asia-Pacific News Center, said, we need to recognize the positive value China brings and objectively look at the reality of China's continuous development and growth.
From interoperability to symbiosis
The vast Pacific Ocean contains vast space for cooperation and unlimited development opportunities. Representatives attending the meeting expressed their willingness to take APEC's "Year of China" as an opportunity to deepen exchanges and cooperation with China in areas such as industrial integration, mutual learning among civilizations, and cooperative communication, so as to jointly promote mutual benefit and win-win results.
"With the acceleration of the construction of the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor '2.0 Upgrade', the focus of cooperation between the two countries has expanded from infrastructure construction to industrialization development, as well as technical cooperation, youth employment and other fields." Shezra Harald, Pakistan's Minister of State for Climate Change and Environment Coordination, said that the majority of Pakistani people can truly feel the results of relevant cooperation, which deserves a sustained, objective and in-depth perspective by the media. "A lasting partnership is rooted in a common narrative, mutual trust and mutual understanding."
Vergandi Prayudantoro, editor-in-chief of Indonesia's Antara News Agency, said he looked forward to further deepening media cooperation with all parties through joint reporting, collaborative learning and regional knowledge sharing.
"The future of the Asia-Pacific requires the media to play an important role." Yedin, Deputy Minister of the Ministry of Publicity of Myanmar, believes that when publishing reports, the media should be committed to enhancing mutual understanding among the people and promoting cooperation. All parties can further exchange professional experience, promote digital transformation, and encourage high-quality content production and dissemination.
One flower blooming alone is not spring, but a hundred flowers blooming together fills the garden. Surathai Lekatsen, Director of Thailand’s Public Liaison Office, said that the mission of the Asia-Pacific media is to work together to take care of this vibrant “garden”, to develop more vivid narratives around safeguarding human dignity, enhancing development resilience and promoting common progress, and to further deepen cooperation through mutual learning.
Nguyen Dong Anh, acting president of the Vietnam Diplomatic Academy, said that the Asia-Pacific region is culturally diverse, and media reports play a bridging role. Only by strengthening mutual understanding can we truly tell good stories and hit people's hearts.
Regarding the upcoming APEC leaders' informal meeting, Felipe Cuadra Campos, general counsel of the Chilean newspaper group Trio O'Clock, is full of expectations: "Shenzhen is a vivid epitome of openness, innovation, and cooperation. This hot land will surely attract the attention of the global media."
