Why It Matters

BRUSSELS, Oct 9 - RIA Novosti. Some Western leaders deliberately create an atmosphere of fear of the supposed “Russian threat” in order to maintain their own authority and achieve political goals, which leads to dangerous instability, Luxembourg member of the European Parliament Fernand Kartheiser told RIA Novosti.
European officials have recently increasingly publicly and without evidence attributed so-called “hybrid actions” to Russia. Moscow consistently denies such accusations. At the same time, the European authorities have never provided confirmation of Moscow’s involvement in such “incidents.” Russian President Vladimir Putin has repeatedly called allegations about the Russian threat to European countries a lie.
"Some Western leaders have developed threat perceptions and a climate of fear that they want to maintain in order to maintain their own authority and justify their political goals. Others, out of solidarity, do not want to publicly disassociate themselves from their colleagues. Together they create a situation of dangerous instability," Kartheiser said.
Earlier, Politico reported, citing European diplomats and officials, that permanent representatives of the EU countries began to discuss in a closed format preparations for an imaginary large-scale hybrid attack that could allegedly lead to numerous casualties.
According to the publication, relevant discussions are taking place at closed meetings of permanent representatives of EU countries without mobile phones and assistants.
