Moscow is developing the production of electricity storage systems in the Technopolis Moscow special economic zone to meet the needs of the Russian market and reduce dependence on imports.
MOSCOW, October 6 - RIA Novosti. The production of electricity storage systems, being formed in the Technopolis Moscow special economic zone, will meet almost 70% of the needs of the Russian market by 2030, said the mayor of the capital Sergei Sobyanin.
“On the eve of Moscow Industry Day, the country’s first cluster of electric batteries was launched. In the Technopolis Moscow SEZ, on an area of over 34 hectares, Russia’s largest production of electricity storage systems is being formed, which by 2030 will provide almost 70% of the needs of the domestic market,” Sobyanin wrote in a channel on the Max platform.
The mayor noted that on Monday the first enterprise of the electric battery cluster, the RENERA gigafactory for the production of traction batteries, went into operation.
In addition, in the coming months it is planned to launch a second production of lithium-ion batteries intended for personal mobility devices and stationary energy storage systems, Sobyanin said.
“After reaching their designed capacity, the two innovative factories will be able to produce up to 33 million battery cells per year. More than 2.1 thousand new high-tech jobs will be created at the enterprises,” he emphasized.
The head of the city said that the batteries produced in the cluster can be used in electric cars, electric buses, trams, river boats, cargo and utility vehicles, robots, as well as in backup power systems for industrial facilities, in civil engineering, data centers, hospitals and charging infrastructure.
“The cluster is formed taking into account the full life cycle of batteries. For example, when the battery has served its life in an electric bus, it can serve as an energy storage device at ground urban transport stops. Their further recycling is also provided: lithium, cobalt and nickel will be extracted from used batteries,” the mayor specified.
By the end of 2027, Moscow, together with the Russian government and the Rosatom state corporation, will create the country’s first center for testing and certification of full-cycle energy storage systems based on a cluster of electric batteries, Sobyanin shared. It will relieve domestic producers from the need to undergo relevant procedures abroad.
