Rhine water level drops to record low

Water levels in the Rhine River, Germany's most important inland waterway, have fallen again amid drought to a record low, Reuters reported, citing data from the German Federal Waterways and Shipping Authority (WSV).

“On Thursday, in the critically navigational narrow part of the Rhine in the Kaub area, near Koblenz, the level dropped to two centimeters... On Friday morning it rose again to five centimeters,” the publication said.

A WSV representative explained to the agency that although the new anti-record still requires official verification, preliminary measurement data clearly indicate a historical minimum for the entire period of observations of the Rhine.

At the same time, hydrologists emphasize that the measured level is a reference point and a reference value for navigation. The actual depth of the Rhine fairway in the Kaub area is currently just over a meter.
