Two emergency landings in Barcelona and Valencia after smoke was detected in the engines

Two planes had to make emergency landings this Friday at the airports of Barcelona and Valencia just a few hours apart. The first, a Delta Airlines flight bound for Atlanta, had to return to El Prat after smoke was detected in one of its engines, while a Swiss Air Airbus A320 from Zurich made an emergency landing in Manises and forced five other aircraft to be diverted.

The first incident occurred during the morning at El Prat airport. The Delta Airlines plane had just taken off for Atlanta when a failure was detected in one of the engines, which began to release smoke, according to airport and Civil Protection sources.

Faced with this situation, the aircraft returned to El Prat and made an emergency landing, which forced emergency teams and airport firefighters to be mobilized. Civil Protection of the Generalitat activated the AEROCAT plan for emergencies in air traffic in the alert phase and, around 1:30 p.m., the plane had already been removed from the runway and the incident was closed without leaving any personal or material damage.

Two later, a Swiss Air A320 plane from Zurich had to make another emergency landing, this time at Manises airport in Valencia, where it was scheduled to land in Valencia at 2:10 p.m. However, it ended up arriving late after circling several times in the air.

According to Aena sources, the aircraft landed around 3:30 p.m. and, after landing, remained stopped on the runway for several minutes, which caused operations to be blocked. As a consequence, the airport suspended arrivals and departures for a few minutes and had to divert five flights from Malta, Rotterdam, Amsterdam, Basel and Marrakech.
