[Reporter Lai Xiaotong/New Taipei Report] In order to prevent various cancers and diseases caused by human papillomavirus (HPV) infection, New Taipei City has promoted a publicly funded HPV vaccination policy for junior high school 8th grade students. Those who qualify will receive 2 doses for free, which is estimated to save families approximately 6,000 to 14,000 yuan. Students in New Taipei City who are enrolled in school year 113 (school age from September 2, 100 to September 1, 101) and have not received the first dose of HPV vaccine can get it as soon as possible to enhance protection.

The Health Bureau pointed out that human papillomavirus (HPV) infection does not distinguish between men and women. In addition to being closely related to cervical cancer, it may also cause head and neck cancer, oropharyngeal cancer, anal cancer, and external genital cancer. Since there is currently no specific drug that can effectively eliminate HPV infection, vaccination is the most effective and cost-effective way to prevent it.

The Health Bureau said that it currently provides free 2-dose HPV vaccine to eligible students at public expense. The market price is about 3,000 to 7,000 yuan per dose. Complete vaccination can save families about 6,000 to 14,000 yuan, allowing children to obtain health protection and reducing the financial burden on parents.

Director of Health Chen Runqiu pointed out that the HPV vaccine is currently one of the most effective ways to prevent various cancers and is also the most valuable health gift to children. The World Health Organization (WHO) recommends that vaccination be completed before exposure to the virus to obtain the best protective effect. In particular, adolescents aged 9 to 14 only need 2 doses to establish good immunity. Research shows that complete vaccination with the HPV vaccine can effectively prevent more than 70% of cervical cancers and reduce the risk of various HPV-related diseases such as oropharyngeal cancer, anal cancer, and external genital cancer.

Chen Runqiu said that the HPV vaccine is not only an important weapon for women to prevent cervical cancer, but also an important line of defense for men to prevent related cancers. HPV infection does not distinguish between genders. Vaccination for both men and women can not only protect themselves, but also reduce the risk of virus transmission.

Eligible students can go to the New Taipei City District 29 Health Center or New Taipei City United Hospital Sanchong Campus to complete the vaccination; if they miss the campus vaccination schedule, they can also apply for catch-up vaccination services through the New Taipei City Government cloud counter, and the health center will arrange the vaccination time after review.
