Well-known scholar and literary critic Shi Shu (real name Shi Shunu) passed away on September 24 at the age of 86. The Ministry of Culture stated that Culture Minister Li Yuan expressed deep condolences after hearing the news, and pointed out that Shi Shu has long been deeply involved in the study of Taiwanese literature and modern Chinese literature. With a rigorous academic spirit and a profound literary sociological perspective, he laid the foundation for modern literary criticism. In the 1990s, he compiled and selected Taiwanese novels during the Japanese occupation and made great contributions to the construction of Taiwan's literary history. The Ministry of Culture will award him a certificate of commendation in recognition.

Shi Shu was born in Lukang, Changhua in 1940. She is the eldest sister of the famous "Three Sisters of the Lukang Shi Family" in the literary world (the second sister is the writer Shi Shuqing, and the third sister is the writer Li Ang). Shi Shu graduated from the Chinese Department of Tamkang University and the master's program of the Institute of Chinese Studies of National Taiwan University. She also went to the doctoral program of the Institute of Asian Studies at the University of British Columbia in Canada. After completing his studies, he taught in the Chinese Department of Tamkang University for a long time and trained countless talents.

Shi Shu played an indispensable role in the construction of Taiwanese literary history. As early as the early 1990s, she took the lead in compiling the "Selected Taiwan Novels During the Japanese Occupation Era" to systematically sort out the literary context and spirit of resistance during Taiwan's colonial period. It has become a must-read for researchers and students of Taiwanese literature. In addition, Shi Shu published "Study, City and Country: Left-wing Intellectuals in Novels of the Japanese Occupation Era" in 1994, which deeply explored the spiritual dilemma and spatial flow of colonial intellectuals. The depth and historical depth of her research are still inspiring to this day, laying the foundation for Taiwanese literary research.

In addition, Shi Shu's academic works include "Anthology of Cross-Strait Literature", "Literary Map - Anthology of Cross-Strait Literature", "Overview of Mainland Chinese Literature in the New Era", "Anthology of Chinese Classical Poetics", etc. Whether it is a macroscopic examination of the ideological trends of the times or a microscopic reading of writers' texts, they all demonstrate a broad and transparent academic vision, making him one of the representative scholars currently studying the development of new literature in China and Taiwan.
