There are no pirates in the waters of the Arctic, and this distinguishes the Northern Sea Route from other cargo delivery routes, Vladislav Maslennikov, director of the Department of European Problems of the Russian Foreign Ministry, said in an interview with RIA Novosti.

He noted that delivering goods from Asia to Europe along the Northern Sea Route takes half as much time as through the Suez Canal.

“It’s also more environmentally friendly and safer - there are no pirates in the Arctic,” the diplomat said.

Earlier, Rosatom’s special representative for Arctic development, Vladimir Panov, reported that the sharp increase in piracy in the Straits of Malacca and Singapore creates a request for a safe transportation route, which could be the Northern Sea Route.
