Araqchi criticizes the contradiction of US statements regarding the Strait of Hormuz

(CNN) - Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araqchi criticized what he described as a contradiction in the statements issued by the United States of America, after US President Donald Trump announced earlier on Saturday that he rejected an Iranian proposal to reopen the Strait of Hormuz.

Araqchi said in statements from New York on the sidelines of the United Nations General Assembly meetings that the meetings held by the Iranian mission during the last days in New York focused on "clarifying the Iranian conditions related to the opening of the Strait of Hormuz, in coordination and with the approval of the National Security Council."

He stated in statements carried by the official Iranian News Agency (IRNA), that "these conditions have been detailed and conveyed to the American side through mediators."

Araqchi criticized "the contradiction in the statements issued by the American administration," and explained that his country "is awaiting the final feedback from the mediators to take the appropriate decision."

The Iranian minister also stated that "any future progress remains dependent on fulfilling the declared Iranian conditions."

Trump said on Saturday that he rejects the latest proposal presented by Iran to reopen the Strait of Hormuz, describing it as unacceptable.

“I reject their proposal,” he added in response to a question from reporters about his opinion of the Iranian plan, which promises to quickly reopen the Strait and resume talks on Tehran’s nuclear program in exchange for the United States lifting the naval blockade and ending other economic sanctions.
