The Yunlin Village chief election is fierce, with multiple candidates running in many places

The campaign for the 2026 nine-in-one election is heating up. Candidates’ flags and advertising billboards can be seen on streets everywhere. Although the village chief constituency is small, it is an alleyway battle closest to the local area. The competition is even more fierce. A total of 733 people have registered in 392 villages in 20 townships and cities in Yunlin. Among them, 5 people are competing in 4 villages. The battle situation is tight. In another 146 villages, only 1 person has registered and has been elected early.

In the local public office elections at the end of the year, 686 seats are up for election in Yunlin, including 1 county magistrate, 45 council members, 20 township mayors, 228 township citizen representatives, and 392 village chiefs. Among them, except for 146 village chiefs who have the same quota and are determined to be elected in advance, the remaining 246 villages are highly competitive, with 4 "5 to 1" villages, including Xingnanli and Anxili in Huwei Town, Huashengli in Beigang Town, and Waqiu Village in Yuanchang Township.

There are also 10 villages in "4 to grab 1", including Badili, Zhennanli, Lunfengli in Douliu City, Kendili in Huwei Town, Zhongzhengli in Tuku Town, Jiuxiong Village in Linnei Township, Dayou Village and Fengrong Village in Lunbei Township, Youcai Village in Baozhong Township, and Hainan Village in Taixi Township; there are also 56 villages with three people competing.

Since the village chief constituency is small and the candidates know each other and the voters well, every vote may determine the outcome. The election is fierce and no one dares to be careless until the votes are cast.

Tang Wenqing, the mayor of West Town, Dapi Township, has been re-elected for 9 terms. He is the only one who has registered to challenge for the 10th consecutive victory and is confirmed to be elected. Tang Wenqing is 75 years old. He has been enthusiastic about local affairs since he was young. Many people recommended him to run for village chief. He felt that he was too young. When he was 40 years old, the old village chief was about to retire and he was encouraged to take over. His serious service has been recognized and affirmed by the villagers, and he has been doing it for decades.

Guikeng Township Gui Village Chief Huang Huangyi has been re-elected for 7 terms. This time he is challenging for the 8th consecutive victory. He is the only one registered. In the 28 years since he served as the village chief, he will be there as soon as the villagers call him. When the road was interrupted by typhoons and heavy rains, he braved the rain to investigate. If he could handle it by himself, he would eliminate it on the spot. If it could not be ruled out, he immediately notified the manufacturer and set up warning signs. His years of serious service have been recognized by the villagers.
