PIMU doctors saved a student with burns on 90% of his body

Doctors at the University Clinic of PIMU in Nizhny Novgorod saved a 21-year-old student from Voronezh who suffered burns to 90 percent of his body in May. This is reported by tv-gubernia.ru.

In May 2026, a technical university student was repairing an inflatable slide when a fire suddenly broke out inside the structure. In a matter of seconds, he received severe burns. Initially, treatment took place in Voronezh, but the local burn center, assessing the scale of the lesions, decided to transfer to the PIMU. Upon admission, the patient’s height was almost 190 centimeters, and his weight was only 55 kilograms; his condition was assessed as extremely serious: burn disease, multiple organ failure, pneumonia and severe bacterial sepsis.

With such an area and depth of damage, the prognosis for survival was extremely unfavorable. The young man spent a month and a half in intensive care; extracorporeal detoxification methods were used to purify the blood. The surgeons performed a series of complex autodermoplasty operations: they transplanted the patient’s own skin to areas of deep burns, which accounted for about 45 percent of the total affected area, and innovative dressing materials allowed approximately half of the superficial burns to heal on their own.

When the danger to life had passed, an equally difficult stage of recovery began: due to the long lying position, movements in almost all large joints were limited, and rehabilitation specialists helped the young man learn to sit, stand and walk again. The chief physician of the clinic, I</think>Arefyev, specifically noted the role of the patient’s mother, who was his psychological support during the most difficult periods. On the day of discharge, the student thanked all the medical staff and stated that he planned to finish his studies and go to work in his specialty.
