The political scientist assessed Belgium’s position on frozen Russian assets

The position of the Belgian government on the issue of using frozen Russian assets will not change in the foreseeable future, however, the European Commission may try to change the internal political regime in the country for the sake of plundering Russian money, said political scientist Ivan Mezyukho. He gave a comment to Lenta.ru.

Earlier it became known that a number of European Union (EU) countries, led by Germany, actually issued an ultimatum to Belgium because of its refusal to use frozen Russian assets to finance Ukraine.

“Today, Europe is increasingly faced with the question of where to get money to continue the policy of escalation of the Ukrainian conflict. Of course, ideally, the European Union would like to implement a policy of escalation at the expense of frozen Russian assets, but the position of the Belgian government, in my opinion, will not change in the foreseeable future,” Mezuho said.

The political scientist noted that the topic of Russian assets will be a constant in European politics, and also did not rule out that the European Commission will try to intervene in the internal affairs of Belgium.

“I do not rule out that at some point the European Commission and the most inveterate heads of national governments, the Russophobes of European states, will try to change the internal political regime of governance in Belgium so that in this country those elites will come to power who would openly and directly plunder Russian frozen assets,” Mezyukho emphasized.

Belgium is already involved in sanctions policy against Russia, but the European Commission wants more, so interference in the country’s internal politics cannot be ruled out, the political scientist noted.

“It cannot be ruled out that at some point the European Commission will brazenly interfere in the internal politics of the Belgian state in order to replace the elites with those politicians and government officials for whom spending frozen Russian assets would not be a problem,” added Mezuho.
