(CNN) - The Yemeni army affiliated with the internationally recognized government announced on Sunday that it had launched large-scale military operations against the Ansar Allah group (Houthis) in the governorates of Taiz and Hodeidah, resulting in the Iranian-backed group inflicting “heavy losses in life and equipment.”

The statement quoted a military source as saying that the operations "included a broad attack, this morning, from three axes on the Al-Barah front, restoring sites in Al-Kadha, west of Taiz, and installing new sites south of Hodeidah."

He continued: "This evening, the armed forces were able to break an infiltration attempt by the Houthi militia on the Al-Dhabab front, killing and wounding more than 20 Houthi members, in addition to significant material losses."

The statement also indicated that "warplanes of the armed forces carried out raids targeting sites of the Houthi militia in Al-Barah, south of Hodeidah, and on the western outskirts of Marib. They also targeted sites and gatherings of the militia in Al-Labanat, Al-Alam, and the center of Al-Jawf Governorate, and inflicted on the militia heavy losses in lives and equipment."

Yemen has witnessed an escalation since the beginning of last month between the Houthis and the internationally recognized government, in a test of the fragile truce between the two sides.
