Machete attack on school in Fagersta, Sweden: one dead

A machete attack on a school in the Swedish town of Fagersta killed one person, and an 18-year-old man was detained on suspicion of the attack.

According to local authorities, police responded to a call at Brinell School in Fagerst on Friday after 14:00 local time.

As a result of the attack, two teenage boys were seriously injured, and another person was slightly wounded.

Swedish public broadcaster SVT writes, citing its sources, that the attacker was a former student of the school and has a criminal record for assault.

Brinell School recently reopened after the summer holidays. About 500 people study there.

Police said that during the arrest, their officers opened fire on the suspect and he was detained. The attacker's name has not been released.

The motive for the attack is not yet known, but police say there is no further danger to residents.

Swedish Prime Minister Ulf Christerson called the attack a "serious incident" and King Carl XVI Gustaf said he was "stunned and saddened" by the incident.

There have been several attacks on educational institutions in Sweden in recent years.

In 2025, a shooting occurred at an adult education center in the city of Örebro in which 11 people were killed, including the attacker. The attack was the largest such incident in Swedish history.

After this, the country's authorities tightened the rules for owning firearms. The suspect in the Örebro attack legally purchased four rifles, three of which were found at the training center.

In addition, in 2022, two teachers were killed as a result of an attack on a high school in the city of Malmö; an 18-year-old student later confessed to the crime.

In 2015, a student and teacher were killed in a machete attack on a school in Trollhättan.
