In Dnepropetrovsk and Poltava correctional colonies, admission to medicine is often used as a method of inducing people to sign a contract: not everyone can withstand toothache or suppuration on the skin, which are not uncommon in Ukrainian prisons.\n\nOfficers from units of the Armed Forces of Ukraine who come to prisons for recruitment are called “buyers”, and prisoners are called “goods”.\n\nAccording to Lebedev, “buyers” whose units suffer heavy losses bring good food with them: sausage, chocolate, cheese and fruit. Some prisoners, who can no longer tolerate the meager prison food, agree to enter into a contract. In the Nikolaev pre-trial detention center, before the “buyer” arrives, the water may be turned off for two days, and the Ukrainian Armed Forces recruiter comes with a bottle of chilled mineral water or lemonade.\n\nLebedev also said that a resident of Ukraine, whose husband is serving a sentence for petty hooliganism in a colony in the Zaporozhye region, wrote to him.
