A large truck in Fengshan, Kaohsiung, turned right and hit a female rider in a blind spot. The police called for defensive driving.

There have been 3,197 traffic accidents involving large vehicles in Kaohsiung City in recent August. Failure to maintain a safe distance was the leading cause of the accidents, 878. On the 10th, a large truck turned right in a blind spot in Fengshan District and ran over a woman surnamed Huang. The police called on the public to drive near the intersection and do not stay on the right side of the large vehicle or on the inside of the turn to avoid being caught by the inner wheel.

According to data from the Ministry of Transportation, there were 3,197 traffic accidents involving large vehicles in Kaohsiung in the past August, resulting in 20 deaths and 464 injuries. The largest number of traffic accidents occurred in Xiaogang District (405 accidents, causing 1 death and 20 injuries); followed by 323 accidents in Daliao District, causing 5 deaths and 63 injuries; and 256 accidents in Nanzi District, causing 1 death and 24 injuries.

Among them, there have been 239 truck accidents in Fengshan District in recent August, resulting in one death and 53 injuries. Today, a man named Huang drove a large truck and turned right on Fengsong Road at Jianguo Road in Fengshan District. His sight was in a blind spot. The turning car had a car accident with a female rider surnamed Huang. As a result, Ms. Huang was run over by the wheel and was sent to the hospital with a fractured pelvis and hemorrhagic shock. She was still in danger.

The police analyzed the three major causes of accidents and found that there were 878 incidents of failure to maintain a safe distance, resulting in one death and 75 injuries; 392 incidents of failure to maintain a safe distance, resulting in 85 injuries; and 386 incidents of improper lane changes, resulting in 31 injuries.

The police appeal to the public when driving on both sides of a large vehicle, do not think that "if you can see the large vehicle, it means that the driver of the large vehicle can also see you." Large vehicles tend to have blind spots due to the high driver's seat and long vehicle body, especially the right front, right rear and right side of the vehicle. Especially when approaching an intersection, they should avoid staying on the right side of the large vehicle or on the inside of the turn to avoid being caught in the inner wheel gap.

The police remind the public to drive defensively when encountering large vehicles. "Don't rush faster, don't rush ahead, don't get into gaps, and keep a safe distance." If you cannot confirm whether you are within sight of a large vehicle, you should take the initiative to distance yourself and avoid dangerous areas.
