7 Muslims elected to Congress in US midterm elections

The US people went to the polls to determine the new order in Congress, as well as governors and local assemblies in 36 states.

According to unofficial preliminary results, Republicans lost the majority in both the Senate and the House of Representatives.

On the other hand, 6 Muslim candidates competing for Congress in different regions were entitled to enter the House of Representatives.

First Muslim Senator to the US Congress

Abdul el-Sayed, of Egyptian origin, who is running for the US Senate from Michigan, prevailed over his Republican opponent Mike Rogers in the polls.

Thus, Sayed became the first Muslim senator elected to the US Congress.

6 Muslim names to the House of Representatives

Muslim members currently serving in the US House of Representatives, Ilhan Omar, Rashida Tlaib, Lateefah Simon and Andre Carson, retained their seats in the elections and were entitled to serve in Congress for another 2 years.

On the other hand, Adam Hamawy, a candidate from New Jersey, who worked as a volunteer doctor at the European Hospital in Gaza in 2024 and came to the fore with calls for a ceasefire, also won the elections.

Hamawy became the first Muslim to represent the state of New Jersey in the House of Representatives.

Darializa Avila Chevalier, a candidate from New York, comes to the fore with her later conversion to Islam.

Chevalier won the elections in New York.

On the other hand, although Aisha Wahab, who is a candidate in California, is leading the race, the results have not been announced yet.
